7 Reasons Why Christmas Can Suck
December 7th, 2008by andy
Let’s be honest – Christmas can be a right pain in the arse. Here’s some of the things that you’ll probably be experiencing over the festive period:
Pressure

It’s not like you can ‘opt out’ of Christmas. Unless you manage to flee from the country during this period, you’ll be taking part in Christmas no matter what. Oh yes. You’ll have to visit the parents, the girlfriend’s parents as well as that uncle you only see once a year.
And you must appear jolly at all times, especially when there are children present. You may also be expected to adopt far fetched beliefs regarding a man in a red suit flying a sleigh.
Shopping

People everywhere clamouring to get that last gift. It’s like some kind of quest, some sick and tragic game, that everyone has to take part in, regardless. Busy streets like Oxford street, which is bad enough normally, become warzones where only the fittest survive.
Expectations

Expected to attend Christmas dinner, expected to pull crackers and wear a stupid hat. Expected to buy Christmas cards and send them to people you don’t really know. Expected to be jolly. Who invented this craziness?
I’m sure if in fact Jesus existed he didn’t have to deal with all this rubbish.
Ridiculous Christmas Decorations
Christmas, for some crazed people, means its competition time. Let’s see who can have the most ridiculous and tacky Christmas decorations in the street. A good idea, surely. I have seen houses people clearly spent days dressing up to look like a cheap tart. Flashing. And sapping electricity in huge amounts, all in the name of stupidity.
Christmas Parties
What better way to spend some time before Christmas than getting drunk with a group of people you don’t really like, being sick and behaving inappropriately? You can embarrass yourself in ways you never thought were possible, until the Christmas party.
Christmas Presents

Every single year – the same palava. As well as receiving generally useless presents from your inlaws, you have the added bonus of trying to buy things for your friends and family without upsetting them. So be very careful.
Christmas Cards

A classic Christmas activity – the sending of cards. What a thoughtless waste of paper. And there’s this whole ‘oh, John sent me one so I better send one back’ mentality. Get over it. Why we insist on repeating these bizarre rituals I will never know.
