Gozo – An Accessible Mediterranean Paradise
December 19th, 2008by andy

It may sound like the sort of destination that you’d find in Ghostbusters, but it’s actually incredibly easy to to get to Gozo, in Malta.
The easiest way is to get a flight that arrives in Malta in the day time. Then, if you’re feeling particularly unambitious, just step off the plane and ask a taxi driver for Gozo. It’s that simple.
The taxi driver will take you through Malta and to the ferry, and onto the ferry for a short ride to neighbouring Gozo. Hiring a car from Malta to get to Gozo is probably a bit of a waste of time. The drive between Malta airport and the ferry pier for the Gozo ferry can be a little intimidating if you haven’t done it before.
The ferry is just a short ride of about half an hour – so you can effectively get a taxi straight to Gozo – very easy, fast and, at times, delightful.
The other great thing about Malta and Gozo is the strange yet very clear love for the English the people there have. Which apparently may be totally misplaced.
I heard stories. Stories from the war when there were great cheers for the English ships turning back to Malta, to save the Maltese when actually the British ships were fleeing. Who knows.
Ancient people came to this island and there is evidence that Gozo may be the lost city of Atlantis.
Gozo is basically a large rock in the Mediterranean sea – you can walk across it in less than a day – there are not a huge selection of things to do -but you’ll certainly be able to relax here.
Diving is the main activity on Gozo – and if you don’t dive then you can snorkel. The place has some magnificent places to dive and snorkel – but only I sizeable sandy beach though. That’s at Ramla bay. Boat trips also operate to the surrounding islands – where you can dive off the boats and experience the underwater world.
If you find yourself in Marsalforn, be sure to check out Bo Jangles, in the ‘centre’ of the small town – a great pub, with friendly staff.
And if you want to eat a good steak, go into Marsalforn, turn left and walk along the shoreline for a short time. Keep going past the end of this bay and you cannot fail to find Chez Amand – a real gemstone of restaurants in Gozo. Amand has more than just steaks though – check out his chocolate mousse. Heavenly.
Keep walking past Amands place and you get to the Saltpans – a remarkable area of Gozo formed by the sea, and salt, for eons. It’s a bit like the moon. It’s a great place to spend some time watching the mediterranean crashing into the island.
Gozo is a little known gem, and a real breeze to get to from the UK. Flights are cheap too. If you fancy a few days on a sunny Mediterranean island this place ticks all the boxes – and most of the locals speak English!
