So what’s so good about Gmail then?

You may have noticed more and more of your mates getting gmail or googlemail addresses. There is a reason why – it’s actually a fantastic free service. Nope, we’re not getting paid by google – we actually think that Gmail is one of the coolest things that Google have come up with so far. But why?
Over 7 gigs of Storage Space
Lots. Of. Room.
Google give you a huge amount of storage space for your mails – and this number seems to be going up all the time! So you don’t have to worry about storage restrictions – even with large attachments.
Search
Google are pretty good at this you know. They have a track record. So imagine the power of Google search being used to search through all your emails. Well that’s just what you get. It’s fast, and accurate. No more hours wasted looking for that email for you-know-who. Just search for the name or some text from the email and tada! You’ll find it.
Spam Filter
One can’t get too excited about spam filters (unless you really are a geek) but Gmails’ filter seems to be as good as any in the business, if not better. It’s also FREE. Yes Free. And it works really well. The occasional penis enlargement mail still finds it way through, but these are few and far between now.
Chat
This one is the real winner. Chat with the people you email, within your email. Then you don’t even need to email. Instant communication with your mates wherever you or they happen to be. Works through many company firewalls. To me this has been a godsend.
Video Chat
Just out is video chat via gmail chat – we’ve tested it out and were pretty impressed with the video quality – it’s on a par with skype, and of course – you don’t HAVE to launch skype to use it. If gmail carries on like this it is soon going to be the defacto web based operating system, if they aren’t already.
Threaded Messages
Another great feature. If you don’t know what the threading of email conversations is about then perhaps you are a filer of emails? This functionality basically organises your emails for you. Kind of like an auto filing system for those of you who are still using folders. There is a better way. There is gmail.

On top of all these great features, Gmail is constantly being improved upon. Really. When was the last useful addition to your Hotmail account? Or your Yahoo account? Google are light years ahead on email and they are not slowing down. Why use anything else?
